Here are some snaps from our trip to Slovenia, Kranska Gora, Ljubljana & Zagreb on the way home to Oz, winter 2017.
It had been 20 years since I last visited Ljubljana, and it was as wonderful as I remembered. We stopped in there on the way to Kranska Gora for skiing, and then to Zagreb. This city was brilliant! We found a ski slope in the middle of the old town square, and managed to run through the cold to The Museum of Broken Dreams, The Torture Museum (a bit scary for the 6 year old), the Museum of Illusions and The Museum of Naive Art (Naive artists being self taught.) Croatia was a revelation – the people, the food and of course – The beer: Ožujsko! Mummy is coming!
When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. (And turn into a 10-tonne Tessie).
In Zagreb, when you order Lemonade, you get lemon juice – the real deal!
The Museum of Broken Dreams. There are a lot of broken dreams in this world. I’m noticing a kinda Eastern European focus on the melancholy. Oh, it makes my own Russian Jewish black-heart sing.
Museum of Torture. I’m installing one of these in the kids room.
in Austria, they call these kind of cafe’s “Shicky Micky” (posh)
She hates being photographed.
Museum of Illusions
We organised a transfer to the snow, and our lovely driver stopped here.
We found some ice picks hanging off the back of some kind of industrial machine. Good times!
Our new chum, Gregor!
Shortly after this, we met Gregor, Vanya & their little boy Sydney – they recognised us as Aussies and introduced themselves. (They were a bit excited as Sydney is their favourite place) I didn’t want to ask how they knew. (Was it because I was wearing tracky dax and screeching like a cockatoo?) After 20 or more shots at the bar, her gorgous friend gifted me some eyeliner, and tried to convince me to buy some uber stylish snow boots for half price.
In conclusion: Slovenian’s are stylish, hilarious, and not snobs. (Just look at Melania Trump!)
Photo by Zadie. Out of focus is handy for oldies.
Lake Bled
This guy was a scream. He talked in tobacco scented grunts, with a high pitched laugh. I’m sure he saw us coming a mile away.
Bulls in a china shop, these two.
River Ljubljanica, in the centre of Ljubljana. We stopped here for dumplings, vanilla slice and ice-cream.
